Cosmopolitan magazine’s bra fixation spoils Demi Lovato’s look

I make a habit of scanning magazines on display while on the grocery store checkout line. As hard as I try, I just cannot resist getting my weekly dose of titillating celebrity gossip. Last week I honed in on the latest issue of Cosmopolitan. I read Cosmo in my twenties, but quickly tired of the same old articles about how to attract a man or have the ultimate sex experience. Judging from one of this month’s feature articles, “Best sex ever”, Cosmopolitan seems to be stuck in a time warp. Singer songwriter Demi Lovato appears on the cover, wearing a tangerine spandex cap sleeve dress, with a very wide and deep v front cutout. This style detail showcases her lovely aqua and black lace bra. Out of curiosity, I looked back at the July Cosmo cover. Lo and behold there was adorable Kelly Osbourne in an unbuttoned polka dot blouse tied at the waist. Her coordinating cream polka dot blue bra appeared front and center. Perhaps Cosmopolitan has recently diversified into the bra selling business.

I’m not a fan of the underwear as outerwear trend. I do wear J Crew ribbed tank undershirts in the warm weather when I walk my dog, work out, or sleep. I also think revealing a hint of a lace camisole underneath a jacket or dress looks appropriately sexy. That’s where I draw the line. In my opinion, intentionally showing brassieres, boxer short bands, and thong underpants never improves anyone’s image.

I caution clients against wearing a piece of clothing or an accessory that overpowers and shifts the attention away from where it belongs – the person wearing the outfit. Unfortunately Demi Lovato’s stylist made this mistake. Although I don’t recall her face or remember the color of her eyes, I can describe every detail of Demi’s bra.

Inspired by Coco Chanel’s quote, “Dress shabbily and they remember the dress; dress impeccably and they remember the woman”, I changed her “brasemble” to an ensemble by choosing a different dress and adding a statement necklace by Chloe + Isabel. I also changed up her other jewelry pieces. Take a look; tell me what you think.

I too saw this cover while standing in the grocery line up and I agree with you. A little goes a long way and a lady should leave something to the imagination. I love how you shared with us how you would’ve styled Demi. Your choice of dress is gorgeous and I would love to add my own spin on the jewelry. The Stella & Dot Fall Collection is gorgeous. They are setting trends by creating unique collections with designs specific to Stella & Dot and easy to wear for “real women.” The Kahlo Bib Necklace in Gold would showcase beautifully against the color of the dress. With the Vinatge Studs in Gold, an arm party of the Vintage twist and Renegade bracelets both in Gold, and the Haven Ring!

Thanks so much for your thoughtful comment. It sounds like we are on the same style wave length. I’m also a fan of Stella & Dot, and I like the lovely pieces you selected.
