How I Survived Nordstrom Anniversary Sale

Every July, savvy shoppers wait with anticipation for the start of Nordstrom’s Anniversary Sale. If you haven’t checked out this year’s sale items, there are only five more shopping days left to take advantage of huge bargains. Nordstrom’s impressive lineup of anniversary items never disappoints. This legendary event traditionally offers boots, watches, leather jackets, and purses at deep discounts. My husband just purchased the Cutaway jacket by Halogen for my birthday. It is on sale for $218.90 from $318. I predict that this short open front jacket will become one of my key fall and winter wardrobe pieces. Since I needed a purse, I also bought a medium satchel in a lovely warm brown color by Liebeskind for $165.90, reduced from $248.00.

I worked at the East Coast flagship Nordstrom in Northern Virginia back in 2008 to gain additional fashion experience. My time there accomplished exactly that. Thanks to Nordstrom, I know the top mother of the bride dress designers, and I can explain the differences in fit between J brand and Joe jeans. It is also easy for me to spot a James Perse t-shirt and a Milly dress in an instant. The list of fashion facts stored in my brain from my Nordstrom days goes on and on.

On the other hand, merely penning the words “anniversary sale” brings back my P.N.T.S.D. (Post Nordstrom Traumatic Stress Disorder). All the difficult things I’ve done through the years, like train for marathons, and pursue graduate school while working and parenting, seem like a stroll in the park compared to the two excruciating weeks at Anniversary Sale boot camp. A combination of the following factors created an unforgettable perfect storm, which rained down hard on “Nordi” sales associates: standing for unbelievably long hours, moving faster than the speed of light to assist customers, ringing up phenomenal numbers of purchases, clearing out dressing rooms of mounds of clothing, and eventually returning it all to the floor at the end of a shift. We also had to find time to shop for personal clients, which meant collecting all the items on their wish lists, and bundling them for pick up or mailing. All of these tasks were done under the watchful eyes of a disproportionately high number of mean girl managers whose punishing leadership styles tested me on more than one occasion.

One thing and one thing only got me through that experience. Every night on my way home, I stopped at the nearest McDonald’s drive through for a large chocolate milkshake. I sipped it slowly, taking sure I took the last slurp as I pulled into my driveway. Nothing I have eaten since then has ever tasted as good. Before nodding off to sleep every night of the sale, I congratulated myself for squeaking by another day. As Friedrich Nietzsche once said, “Whatever doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.”
